Choosing infant health care providers

There are several types of health professionals who are qualified to care for you and your child.

Pediatrician

The pediatrician is a doctor who specializes in the care and management of health problems of infants, children, and adolescents. Many clinics have pediatric specialists in the departments that are consulted whenever appropriate.

Family Practitioner

The family practitioner is a doctor who specializes in general health care of all family members. Family practitioners provide normal pediatric care and refer special problems to a pediatrician or other specialist.

Neonatologist

The neonatologist is a pediatrician specifically trained to manage the care of high-risk newborns that have special problems such as prematurity, breathing difficulty, or birth disorders.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

The pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) is a registered nurse with specific training focused on the health care of children. PNP’s perform infant assessment and work closely with families to meet their health needs.
