MARSHFIELD – The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) have recognized Marshfield Medical Center in Marshfield for excellence in lactation care with the 2021 IBCLC Care Award.
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. This award recognizes the dedicated lactation care and new services such as follow-up support in pediatric appointments that we have been able to offer patients in Marshfield.
Marshfield Medical Center is the only IBCLC Care Award Recipient in central Wisconsin.
“We are a dedicated group of staff that works with families during pregnancy, in the hospital after delivery and after hospital discharge providing ongoing support and helping new families with the best start with breastfeeding," said Jessie Richardson, lactation consultant, Marshfield Medical Center. “We focus on individual needs based on each situation assisting them achieve their goals."
Lactation consultants focus on preventive care, and are available during pregnancy to assess and provide information on how to successfully initiate breastfeeding. They continue that assistance after the baby is born by helping families overcome breastfeeding challenges, providing accurate information, and continuing to support them as their baby grows. They also assist families returning to work or school, help families in more unusual situations such as breastfeeding more than one baby or nursing a sick or premature infant, and help train nursing staff to manage basic breastfeeding care.
