Dr. Veera Kommisetti sees adult patients with depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. He also has a special interest in working with women in all stages of life to address mental health concerns as hormones fluctuate.
He receives referrals from around the state to treat women's mental health. Dr. Kommisetti has been treating women's mental health for last six years with over 6,000 patient encounters. He works with women during pregnancy, breastfeeding, perimenopausal and menopausal to manage worsening symptoms because of hormones. Dr. Kommisetti evaluates patients who have concerns to identify and review medications to ensure they remain safe and effective.
Dr. Kommisetti is the only specialist certified to offer Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in Northern and Central Wisconsin and has performed more than 3,500 ECT treatments. This medical treatment most used in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, major depression, autism or severe bipolar disorder.
On the forefront of precision medicine, Dr. Kommisetti performs cytochrome P450 tests. It's an oral swab test, and he evaluates the genetic results to prescribe medication best suited for the patient. “I see patients who are frustrated with side effects or don't want to go through the process to try new medications," he said. “This testing allows us to narrow down which medications will be the most effective for that patient."
Dr. Kommisetti enjoys the field of psychiatry because he is able to help people with issues, they often are reluctant to talk about with friends or even family.
Dr. Kommisetti focuses on patient-centered care, giving them evidence-based advice while considering their family history and preferences.
“My patient happiness and wellbeing are my focus. It takes teamwork with the patient, me and their care team to help them make progress," he said. “That is really the ultimate reward and why I do this work. Seeing people improve their lives is deeply fulfilling."
Dr. Kommisetti earned his medical degree from Katuri Medical College in India. He completed a residency in psychiatry from University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.
In his free time, Dr. Kommisetti likes to stay active by playing sports. He also enjoys reading medical articles and journals.
