“A hand surgeon has the capability to make an immediate and major difference in the daily lives of patients.”
Dr. Steven B. Sanford is a hand surgeon in
orthopedics. He works exclusively
with elbows and hands repairing joints and bones.
“There is the mental aspect of it because of
the intimacies of the hand,” he said. “There
is also the mechanics of how it works and
how we control it. It’s very complicated,
therefore interesting.” He also enjoys being
able to work on more than bones, because
he also deals with the nervous system,
blood circulation in the hand, and the
tendons that hold it together.
He came to Marshfield Clinic from Charlotte, North Carolina, where he practiced for 15 years, including eight years in a solo practice. But he knew what to expect with Marshfield because he completed his general surgery residency here from 1992 to 1997.
“As I spoke with people here, I realized that the feeling of the Clinic hadn’t changed in 20 years. The community was also still comfortable and small,” he said.
Dr. Sanford earned his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit.
He completed a fellowship in hand surgery at Rush Presbyterian- St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago in 1998.
He enjoys being with his family and playing hockey, and he has completed six marathons and is in training for more. He and his wife, Cindy, have two teenage boys.
