Dr. Jessica Wernberg specializes in the surgical treatment of cancer, predominately gastrointestinal and intra-abdominal malignancies.
“Cancer is scary. I believe that we help people understand their disease and feel empowered,” she said. “I love the relationships I’m able to develop with my patients. I try to communicate with them about what is happening to them during a very difficult time in their lives.”
Dr. Wernberg feels strongly about a team approach to cancer care. “It is critical to involve the appropriate specialty physicians, working in concert with the patient’s primary provider, to optimize cancer treatment plans.”
She recalls that as a teenager, the last thing she would have predicted would have been that she would return to her hometown of Marshfield. But with two children and an unpredictable surgery call schedule, it’s certainly practical for her and her husband to be close to family. “Marshfield Clinic Health System is a fantastic organization that allows me to be close to family and have a very satisfying surgical oncology practice.”
She also is committed to surgical resident education and involves residents in many aspects of patient care.
Dr. Wernberg earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She completed her residency in general surgery at the former Marshfield Clinic Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital. She then completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, and then returned home to Marshfield.
