Dr. Vijaya Nirujogi comes from a family of physicians. She specializes in minimally invasive complex procedures, including upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgeries.
"It is so gratifying to see my patients lose significant amount of weight after bariatric surgery. But this surgery also tremendously improves and oftentimes results in complete resolution of their medical problems like diabetes, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and heart disease," Dr. Nirujogi said. "I am glad to contribute to the overall positive impact in their physical, personal and social life."
Dr. Nirujogi also performs other major surgeries by laparoscopy including surgery for acid reflux, hiatal and abdominal wall hernia, gall bladder, stomach and bowel problems, splenic disorders and more.
"I try to lessen the stress of surgery by utilizing minimally invasive laparoscopy methods whenever possible," she said. "It helps my patients recover faster from surgery with the least amount of post-operative pain."
Dr. Nirujogi came to Marshfield Clinic Health System after completing her fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. She earned her medical degree in India and completed a general surgery residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center in Bronx, New York. She worked in England prior to moving to the U.S. and obtained a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, UK.
Her husband, Dr. Vivek Gonugunta, is an endovascular neurosurgeon at Marshfield Medical Center. They have two children. She enjoys spending time with her family and reading.
