“I want to help my patients pave the way to healthy and safe decisions, especially when it comes to their health care."
Dr. Sinduja Lakkunarajah is an adolescent medicine provider. She sees patients for menstrual and reproductive health concerns, non-surgical ovarian cysts, depression and anxiety and more.
Dr. Sinduja Lakkunarajah has always had a passion for pediatrics, but chose adolescent medicine because teenagers and young adults are a unique and vulnerable group.
A board-certified physician, Dr. Lakkunarajah sees patients for menstrual concerns (including primary and secondary amenorrhea, Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and more), non-surgical ovarian cysts, long-acting reversible contraception (IUD and Nexplanon placement and removals), sexually transmitted disease testing and counseling, eating disorders, depression and anxiety and breast complaints.
“They are not children, but they too are growing and developing into adults. They have questions along the way regarding their health that many are not able to help answer," she said. “This population is fascinating, challenging and always keeps me on my toes."
When providing patient care, she finds the most important elements to be listening and allowing her patients to participate in their care. She also wants to provide them with an environment where they are given privacy so that they feel safe to discuss their concerns and make decisions about their care.
“I'll lay out their options and ask my patients based on their needs what they would want to do…they know best what they are going through, so I want to give them room to speak and tell me what their concerns are," she said.
Dr. Lakkunarajah received her master of medical and health professions education from Eastern Virginia Medical School. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and completed her fellowship in Adolescent Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals.
Dr. Lakkunarajah and her husband enjoy board games, and proudly own a collection of over 100 games. They have one daughter and also enjoy traveling and spending more time outdoors.
