As a medical oncologist/hematologist, Dr. Patcharin Tanawattanacharoen helps treat patients with cancer using chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other treatment options.
She decided to provide care for those with cancer because she wanted to help improve treatments.
“Back then cancer did not have good outcomes. The field has progressed since I graduated from medical school in 1987 - we can now provide better care,” said Dr. Tanawattanacharoen. “I truly enjoy being there for my patients.”
In being there for her patients, she respects that their decisions are important. This is why she uses scientific information to help guide her patients through decisions while still respecting their wishes.
“I try to understand what they believe and how we can integrate it into their treatments,” said Dr. Tanawattanacharoen. “I believe medicine is about integrating treatments with what the patients need to provide the best care.”
She also believes in using the latest treatments available including advances in technology and clinical trials. This, coupled with early detection, can help improve survival.
Dr. Tanawattanacharoen completed her residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio in internal medicine and her fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland in oncology/hematology.
She enjoys spending time with her husband, a nephrologist with the Health System, and her two kids. Her hobbies include hiking, swimming and biking.
