“What patients get from me is a lot of experience, cautious judgment, compassion and unwavering dedication.”
Moshe Schein is a general surgeon who has made a name for himself far beyond Rusk County where he has practiced medicine with Marshfield Clinic since 2006. Schein is an accomplished author whose surgical books he penned have become international best sellers and read by surgeons around the world.
If you are wondering what drew a world renowned surgeon and author to Ladysmith, Schein has a quick answer because he’s been asked about it so often. “After 25 years of academic surgery and big city hospitals, I craved for a change,” he says. “I found it here in Rusk County, with country living, the outdoors and a rural setting.”
Schein likes the area so much he refers to it as a “paradise.” As an avid skier and bicyclist, you can understand his enthusiasm for the northwoods. He fishes and kayaks the Flambeau River, which is a perfect venue to do both.
While hobbies excite him, he is most passionate about his patients. He joined Marshfield Clinic because the organization shares his commitment to them. “We both are totally committed to solving their problems,” he says. “I went into the medical field to save lives, alleviate suffering and improve my patient’s quality of life.”
Educated in Israel and South Africa, Schein earned his medical degree from Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical School in Jerusalem and completed his residency at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He followed that up with two fellowships, the first at Leeds General Infirmary in England and later at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
Schein’s books on emergency abdominal surgery and on surgical complications have been translated into many languages. He takes pride in knowing his expertise is saving lives not only in northwest Wisconsin but around the world.
