“I'm passionate about educating my patients and making sure all concerns are addressed."
Dr. Michelle Pedersen, optometrist, sees patients age three and older for a variety of eye care needs, including routine or diabetic exams, contact lenses and glaucoma or certain corneal concerns.
While she was a chemistry major in college and was thinking of going into research, Dr. Michelle Pedersen realized that career wasn't the best fit because she wanted more personal interactions with people.
She started exploring health care careers and optometry peaked her interest.
“I was employed as a college student by the Minnesota Optometric Association, where I helped match doctors with patients who needed but couldn't afford eye care…I got to know a little bit about optometry that way. This field and the way the eye functions was always interesting to me. What vision brings to our life experiences is truly amazing," she said.
Dr. Pedersen received her doctoral degree from Indiana University School of Optometry and completed her residency in ocular disease and low vision rehabilitation at Kansas City VA Medical Center. She is board certified by the American Board of Optometry. After practicing in Milwaukee for a number of years, she relocated to the Eau Claire area to be closer to family.
Dr. Pedersen provides comprehensive primary eye care. She sees patients age three and older for a variety of eye conditions and evaluations. She is experienced in caring for patients with conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disease including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, and a variety of acute eye health and vision problems. Dr. Pedersen also fits contact lenses.
“As a provider, patient education has to be important. I want to take the time to explain exactly what I'm finding and give advice on what can be done, even preventatively, for vision and eye health. This includes talking about nutrition and lifestyle changes that can lead to better results long-term," she said.
Outside of work, Dr. Pedersen enjoys hiking and being outdoors, including hiking through national parks and walking with her dog. She also enjoys yoga and spending time with her three children.
