“I am most passionate about patient relationships and sincerely want to help them all live healthier, happier lives.”
Dr. Melissa Emmerich’s mom was the first person who sparked her interest in health care. After taking an aptitude test, she confirmed it was a good fit. She shadowed various health care providers during her undergraduate years and enjoyed working with a family medicine physician.
“I love the patient relationships,” Dr. Emmerich said. “But I also like to be able to teach, do research, and continuously learn and develop new skills that help people have healthier lives.”
Through her training, she was drawn to women’s health because of the excitement and anticipation of pregnancy and childbirth. Dr. Emmerich found her niche as an obstetrics and gynecology physician because she can be a primary care provider and perform surgery and
deliveries. It was the combination of her interests, and she continued to learn more about health and wellness.
“After many years in obstetrics and gynecology, I found myself encountering more and more patients who needed help with weight management,” she said. “I recognized how excess body weight affects all aspects of a person’s health – physical, psychological, social function, heart disease and cancer risk and more. Thus, 20 years into practice, I stopped doing obstetrics and got board certified in obesity medicine.”
Dr. Emmerich now sees patients for gynecologic care and medical weight loss management.
“Maintaining a positive outlook is so important,” she said. “I try to share kindness, thankfulness, and optimism with everyone I meet.”
Outside of work, Dr. Emmerich loves outdoor adventures and gardening. She also is passionate about maintaining her personal health with regular fitness activities and healthy eating.
“My family and my faith are my No. 1 priorities,” she said.
