"Patients come to me with a variety of vision issues caused by neurological problems. "I listen to the patient and enjoy crafting a plan to best address each individual patient."
It was never a question for John Mitchell, M.D. what career he wanted to go into. Dr. Mitchell said when he was a child, he had a family doctor who was very impressive and watching him, he knew he wanted to be in medicine.
Neuro-Ophthalmology treats patients for vision loss, fuzzy vision, pain behind the eyes, nerve imbalances, drooping eyelids, intracranial pressure or "any unusual complaints" stemming from neurological issues leading to vision problems.
Dr. Mitchell is board certified in ophthalmology, has a wealth of experience and has been in medicine for nearly 50 years. Mitchell was a key member in the first ophthalmology center at Harlem Hospital Center.
Dr. Mitchell said the most enjoyable part of his job is seeing and learning from patients.
"Every day is something new," he said. "The more I see, the more I learn. I have been given an opportunity to spend time with patients. I thoroughly enjoy listening to them and ensuring I am giving them the best care I can."
Dr. Mitchell has wanted to be a doctor from a very young age. He graduated from medical school at Cornell University in 1973. Mitchell completed his internship and residency in ophthalmology at Harlem Hospital Center in New York. He went on to complete his fellowship at New-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York in neuro-ophthalmology.
On a regular basis, Dr. Mitchell does medical missionary work. Mitchell was the section chair with National Medical Association.
Outside of work, Dr. Mitchell enjoys tennis, golf, writing, chess, playwriting and spending time with his family. Dr. Mitchell is married with two daughters.
