Delyse Garg, M.D., has always wanted a career that was both challenging and interesting, which is why she works as a pulmonologist and critical care physician.
She treats a variety of acute and chronic lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension. In the Intensive Care Unit, she manages shock, acute respiratory distress syndromes, infections and respiratory failure.
“With critical care there is always opportunity to be creative and think on your feet," Dr. Garg said. "You get to interact with and coordinate care among a variety of specialists, which broadens the scope of your knowledge and practice. In pulmonary medicine, my goal is to keep patients out of the hospital, and empower them to take charge of their own health."
Dr. Garg believes heavily in relating to patients and understanding where they are coming from.
“It's really important to put yourself in the patient's shoes," she said. “A textbook can tell you how to treat an illness, but not how to care for a patient. You have to understand where they are coming from."
Dr. Garg went to Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India where she received her medical degree with honors. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Rutgers Medical School at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth, New Jersey, and fellowship at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, New Jersey, in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
In her spare time, Dr. Garg enjoys playing keyboard and singing, reading, practicing Karate, camping and spending time with her cats.
