Dr. Ayman Eltayeb Elhag Ahmed was drawn to vascular surgery because of the diversity it provides, fine set of surgical skills and the ability to develop long-lasting relationships with patients.
“It is important to treat your patient as a human being," Dr. Ahmed said. “You have to be focused on treating the patient as a whole unit and not just relating to vascular surgery. Listening to your patient is very important. The amount of information you get from the patient is invaluable. The scan can't provide the information like a patient can."
As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Ahmed treats people with anything that effects the blood vessels, including vascular trauma, artery blockage resulting in stroke, pain with eating or walking, non-healing wounds, vascular aneurysms, simple and complex dialysis access (fistulas, grafts, catheters), blood clots in veins, venous system issues and varicose veins causing pain to walk. Dr. Ahmed has special interest in Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), complex venous reconstruction and arterial aneurysms.
“When patients are seen in a surgical specialty clinic often they won't be seen again, but not in vascular surgery. You see them and establish a long-term relationship with them," Dr. Ahmed said. “It's a very rewarding profession, and you are very confident when operating on someone. As a vascular surgeon, there is more than one way to treat a patient. You're a surgeon and a physician and there are a number of pathology diseases you treat medically."
He received his medical degree from University of Khartoum in Khartoum, Sudan. Dr. Ahmed completed residency in general surgery at University of California-San Francisco, California and fellowship at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Ahmed is married with three children. In his spare time, he enjoys playing soccer and table tennis, bike riding, traveling and spending time with family exploring new places.
