Constipation during pregnancy

Hormonal changes occur during pregnancy which may cause constipation (difficulty in having bowel movements).

Late in pregnancy, constipation may become even more of a problem due to the enlarged uterus pressing on the lower intestine. Prenatal iron and vitamins may also be constipating for some women.

  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water or other liquids a day
  • Eat foods that are high in fiber, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, bran and whole grain cereals and breads.
  • Exercise daily
  • Take fiber supplements as directed on the label.

If these measures fail, check with your provider. Do not take laxatives, enemas, or other home remedies unless they are prescribed.
