Special Care Pregnancies

Most pregnancies are uncomplicated, but there are some conditions that can threaten you and your baby's well-being.

Knowing when to call your health care provider can ensure prompt treatment for any problem that might arise. Early signs of complications may be:

  • Bleeding from the vagina, rectum, nipple or lungs (coughing blood)
  • Sudden, large weight gain
  • Sudden increase in swelling of the legs, hands or face
  • Severe headaches
  • Persistent dimness, blurred vision, flashes of light or spots before your eyes
  • Sharp and prolonged pain in your abdomen
  • Severe or continued vomiting
  • High fever (above 100.4 degrees F) with chills
  • Painful urination
  • Sudden escape of fluid from the vagina
  • Stopping or slowing of fetal movement

If you notice any of these signs, do not wait for your next checkup. Contact your health care provider immediately so the problem can be assessed.
