Memory Clinic
Our multidisciplinary team includes a neurologist actively involved in research relating to memory disorders, aging, and long-term memory, along with neuropsychologists, genetic counselors, social workers, speech and language pathologists specialized in cognitive remediation and other health care professionals. They work together to determine the cause of your memory impairment, and advise you and your family on the best treatment plan.
Your care team develops an individualized care plan and makes referrals to appropriate community resources. We also work closely with referring primary care physicians and geriatricians to coordinate your medical and memory care.
Your First Visit
For your first visit, we recommend that you bring a loved one or caregiver with you who can help answer questions about your memory changes and take notes. We also ask you to request that your primary care or referring provider send us your medical history and copies of any prior brain scans and neurological evaluations, blood work, spinal tap results or any other aspect of workup you had for this issue. Your visit will include:
- A consult with an experienced neurologist who is an expert in dementia diagnosis and treatment
- A detailed review of your medical history, including past and present brain scans
- A neurological examination
- Cognitive testing to assess memory, language, attention, executive function and visuospatial function
- Diagnostic testing, including blood tests, brain MRI, PET scan and cerebrospinal fluid testing, if needed
- Development of a treatment plan that may include medications to slow memory loss, non-pharmacological approaches, psychotherapy or cognitive therapy
- Counseling to discuss questions and to review your doctor's recommendations
- Counseling regarding participation in clinical trials for patients interested in pursuing more advanced treatments. If we do not have a clinical trial that fits you, we will review statewide and regional options for access to clinical trials most appropriate for your condition.
- Reviewing brain health strategies, including diet, exercise and supplements
