Local Health Care Research with Global Impacts

Marshfield Clinic Research Institute teams lead and support research to improve rural health care locally and across the nation. This includes rural and agricultural health and safety, human genetics, molecular biology, virology, immunology, epidemiology, trauma, cancer, and biomedical informatics research. The Research Institute, founded in 1959, is a division of Marshfield Clinic Health System and is the largest private medical research institute in Wisconsin.

Research in Greater Wausau and Weston Area

  • In 2022, 23 patients participated in life-saving clinical trials at Marshfield Medical Center-Weston. Through these programs, they have access to innovative treatment options and care.
  • Patients can participate in research trials locally for areas such as oncology and Lyme disease with the Clinical Research Unit at Marshfield Medical Center-Weston. This is a convenient location for patients to participate in research studies, have samples collected and undergo physical examinations that are required for study participants.
  • With donor support, National Farm Medicine Center has retrofitted 29 tractors in Marathon County with lifesaving rollover protection structures (ROPS) and seatbelts.
  • Marshfield Medical Center-Weston patients can participate in the Connect for Cancer Prevention Study. This study works to better understand the causes of cancer and how to prevent it. Marshfield Clinic Health System is one of nine health care systems in the country to partner with the National Cancer Institute for Connect.
  • Residents of the greater Wausau and Weston area can participate in the All of Us Research Program, a nationwide effort to advance precision medicine research, to improve and customize care for individuals.

Precision Medicine
  • The Center for Precision Medicine Research gives patients access to new diagnostics and therapies, innovating care now and in the future.
Clinical Trials and Studies
  • Patients have access to care through open clinical trials. This includes study-related follow-up visits, procedures, and lab tests at no cost to them or their insurance.
  • Scientists collaborate with providers across the Health System to provide patients access to more than 440 open clinical trials annually.
Infectious Diseases and Tick-Borne Disease Research
  • For 30 years researchers have led studies to help prevent and treat tick-borne infections such as Lyme disease, babesiosis and anaplasmosis.
  • Patients have early access to treatments improved long-term outcomes for pediatrics and adults.
National Influenza Leader
  • Center for Clinical Epidemiology & Population Health pioneered studies in evaluating the effectiveness of annual influenza vaccines and has remained a leader in the field for nearly 20 years. This work has improved overall care in vaccine efficacy, effectiveness, and safety.
Genetics Research
  • Researchers played a critical role in sequencing the human genome, developing one of the first and best structural genetic maps of humankind.
  • The human genome sequence creates a better understanding of the genetic basis of diseases and improves diagnosis.
Farm Health and Safety
  • Dedicated to improving the health and well-being of farmers and their families, the National Farm Medicine Center is the largest agricultural health and safety team in the U.S.
  • The National Children’s Center for Rural Agricultural Health and Safety works with communities to reduce injuries and fatalities for youth living and working in agricultural communities.
Trauma Care
  • Data shows low-density population areas have higher rates of trauma fatalities. The trauma research program improves the critical quality of trauma care and acute care surgery by studying the unique character of rural area trauma and improving prevention and patient recovery.

Known as vNOTES (vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery), the advanced gynecologic technique provides many benefits to female patients, such as a shorter hospital stay, less postoperative pain, no visible scars, and a faster recovery time.

Weston hospital receives national cardiology award
Marshfield Medical Center-Weston recently received an American College of Cardiology NCDR Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Performance Achievement Award for 2024. The award recognizes sustained, high-level performance in quality of care for heart attack patients. Weston was awarded the Gold award and is one of 61 nationwide hospitals to receive this recognition.
