Dr. Matthew Tomcik was fascinated by science and the things we know. He had wanted to use that knowledge of science in the service of people, which drew him toward the field of medicine.
He had liked many of the various specialties in medicine during his medical training, but chose family medicine as it provided him an opportunity to practice, to an extent, in almost all areas he enjoyed.
Dr. Tomcik received his medical degree from Indiana University – School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana and completed a residency in family medicine at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana. He is board certified in family medicine.
He sees patients of all ages for primary care, including management of chronic diseases and wellness exams and physicals. This includes providing care for hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, eczema, allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, acne, depression, infections, anxiety disorders and in-office treatment of moles, warts and benign skin lesions.
“I believe that the principles of evidence-based medicine must be combined with understanding the situation of the patient. This means looking at their background, preferences, resources, tolerance for risk and hopes for the future," he said. “It's also imperative that high-quality communication take place so that informed decisions can be made."
In his practice, Dr. Tomcik most enjoys the long-term care of individuals, rather than any one disease state.
“I enjoy being a resource for an individual for multiple problems over time," he said.
Dr. Tomcik is married with three children.
