As a specialist in colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Velasco fills a unique role in the medical profession. “There are not many surgeons in this field,” he noted. “The frequency of intra-abdominal problems such as colon cancer offers rewarding opportunities to help patients live better lives.”
Dr. Velasco’s journey from Mexico included an internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. After practicing for several years in Minneapolis, Dr. Velasco came to Marshfield in 2001. “From the very beginning, I knew I had made the right choice,” he said. “The complexity and variety of cases has sharpened my knowledge and skills.”
Dr. Velasco shares this knowledge while treating his patients. “My general philosophy is to treat patients with kindness and respect, honestly communicating with them and responding to their specific health concerns.”
This sharing of knowledge does not stop with his patients. Dr. Velasco is the director of the general surgery resident training program at Marshfield Clinic. For this work, he has received surgical education awards from Marshfield Clinic.
Dr. Velasco and his wife have one daughter. When not practicing medicine, he enjoys bicycling, having participated in a number of organized road riding events throughout the United States and Europe.
